Experience a whale and dolphin safari from Nilaveli on Sri Lanka's east coast. We head out at sunrise, when the sea is usually calmest, to look for blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins in the wild.
Operated by Pigeon Island Tours Pvt Ltd, Nilaveli, since 2016
Off Trincomalee, deep water lies unusually close to the coast, cut by a large submarine canyon. The open sea where whales feed and travel is a short boat ride from the beach, not a long crossing.
The east coast also has its calmer season when much of the south and west is rough, roughly March to October.
Whales and dolphins are wild animals. Sightings cannot be guaranteed and depend on wildlife behaviour, weather and sea conditions.

Both leave Nilaveli at first light with a captain, a spotter, life jackets and a safety briefing.

The largest animal ever known. Watch for the tall blow and the lifted tail. Blue whale watching in Sri Lanka
Deep divers with a square head and a bushy blow angled forward.
We keep our distance, never chase or block an animal's path, slow down near whales and dolphins, and leave quietly when they move away. No touching, feeding or swimming with wildlife. Our responsible watching code

About 2 hours from leaving the beach to returning.
No one can promise that. Whales and dolphins are wild, and sightings depend on their behaviour, the weather and the sea. Spinner dolphins are seen on many trips; whales are less predictable.
