Blue Whale Watching in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one of the few places where blue whales are found close to shore. Trincomalee on the east coast is one of the two main places to look for them; the other is Mirissa in the south.

Trincomalee or Mirissa?

The two coasts have opposite calm seasons. Mirissa trips usually run from about November to April, when the south coast is calmer. Trincomalee's calmer season is roughly March to October. Choose the coast that matches your travel dates.

How to recognise a blue whale

Look for a tall, column-shaped blow, a very long mottled blue-grey back, a tiny dorsal fin set far back, and sometimes the tail flukes lifted before a deep dive.

Other whales you may see

Sperm whales are also seen off Trincomalee. They have a square head and a bushy blow angled forward. Other species are recorded less often.

Watching blue whales responsibly

We stop well back, never chase or cut across a whale's path, and leave when it moves away. Read our code.
