Trincomalee Whale Watching Season

Roughly March to October. Sri Lanka's two coasts have opposite seasons: while the south (Mirissa) is rough in the summer monsoon, the east coast around Trincomalee is usually calmer.

We don't name a single "best month": sightings vary from year to year.

Best time of day

We leave at sunrise because the sea is usually smoothest early, the light is softer for photos and the heat is lower. This improves conditions for spotting; it does not guarantee more whales.

Planning a trip outside the season?

Between November and April, the south coast around Mirissa is usually the better option. See blue whale watching in Sri Lanka.
